Why You Should Wash Pop Cans

by Randy Justason

I recently read about a woman who had gone boating and had taken some cans of soda pop with her which she kept in the refrigerator of her boat. The very next day (Tuesday) the lady was taken to the hospital and placed in intensive care. She died the following day.

An autopsy was performed on this lady and it was concluded that she had died of Leptospirosis which was later traced to the soda she had drank directly from the can instead of using a glass.

Later tests showed that the soda can was infected with dried rat urine, and hence, the disease Leptospirosis. Apparently rat urine contains toxic and deadly substances.

How could something like this happen?

When one thinks about this for awhile we begin to see how. Try to imagine several thousand flats of soda pop sitting in a warehouse for any length of time and you can see the possibility of rats, mice, bugs and who-knows-what crawling over the cans.

Next consider how many people got to handle that can of pop before you decided to purchase it and put it to your lips. Not a very apetizing thought.

Now think about what you do when you get that can of pop home. You probably store it in your fridge or cupboards for awhile and then you simply pop the top and start enjoying that refreshing, thirst-quenching, ice cold drink.

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of soda cans are often more contaminated than public washrooms!

How can we minimize the chance of contacting a disease from contaminated pop cans? One way is to pour the contents into a glass instead of drinking out of the can. Of course you may not have access to a glass at the time so you should get into the habit of wiping off the top of the can before you drink from it. If possible, use a wet cloth to wash the top of the can.

I know that we don't all go through life in a plastic bubble and we can't always protect ourselves against every little thing that comes our way. But the next time you stick your dollar into a pop machine and pop the top of a cold one try to imagine where that can has been and use a little caution.
