“Your Household Cleaners Could Do You In”

By Randy Justason

Mixing household cleaners is a potentially dangerous action and a very bad idea. Some people think that mixing cleaners together will make a better cleaner. Unfortunately, this mindset could cause you to end up in the hospital, or even worse. It can be fatal.

Just think about this.....

A housewife, while cleaning her bathroom, was using an acid based toilet bowl cleaner. She was not satisfied with the way it was removing stains so she added household bleach and stirred it with a brush. Unfortunately, this lady was overcome by fumes and died very quickly from chlorine gas.

It might surprise you to know that this actually happens more often than we would like to think, and not only in our homes. You can do a search on Yahoo, Google or MSN for "dangerous cleaning products" and find many many examples of how people have been killed by mixing household cleaners.

Many industries, including restaurants, hospitals, schools, manufacturing plants, shopping centers, etc use several different cleaners in the run of a day. Mixing just two different kinds of these cleaners can have a devastating effect.

Should you worry about chlorine in household cleaners? In a word: Yes.

Many household cleaners contain chlorine, though it is often called something else, such as "sodium hypochlorite" or "hypochlorite", among other names.

Products of special concern which may contain chlorine by itself or as a mixture with other chemicals include: automatic dishwashing detergents, chlorine bleach, chlorinated disinfectant cleaners, mildew removers, and toilet bowl cleaners, just to name a few.

One of the effects of breathing in the fumes of cleaners containing a high concentration of chlorine is irritation of the lungs. This could be particularly dangerous for people suffering from heart conditions or respiratory problems such as asthma or emphysema.

Chlorine is also a highly corrosive substance, capable of damaging your skin and eyes. And this it does on it's own. Mix some of those cleaning solutions with other solutions, such as bleach, and you have created a deadly mixture.

Just think about this for a minute. Imagine you just finished cleaning your floor with one of those harsh cleaners, one where you had to wear gloves to use it. Now imagine letting your baby crawl around on that floor....Sounds like a bad scenario doesn't it? It happens more often than you would care to think about.

So, how can we be safe with household cleaners that we are using daily?

First off, be aware of all of the different types of cleaners you are using by taking inventory. Don't forget to check under all of the sinks, in the pantry, in the basement and in the garage. You'll be surprised how many different cleaning products you have.

Next, read the labels to see just how many contain harmful chemicals and/or chlorine. You'll probably be surprised to see how many say to keep out of reach of children. Not really the kind of stuff you want hanging around under the kitchen sink.

If you really read the labels you'll probably find that one or two of them will do 99% of your daily cleaning. The remainder are there because we've been programed to buy a different cleaner for every job. It's not your fault, that's how the advertising companies get paid.

So now you can get rid of most of them. Please check with your local Environmental Agency or other Government Agency to find out where you can safely dispose of them.

Now that you're down to a few cleaners check those labels again to see just what is in them. Do not store them close to each other if they contain any dangerous chemicals or chlorine. Keep them well separated to avoid possible accidental spilling and mixing of these potentially dangerous cleaners.

The best possible solution to this problem is to purchase environmentally safe, natural cleaning products. The Veriuni line of products is an excellent example of products specifically designed to provide the best possible cleaning action and are completely safe and environmentally friendly. They sell one of the best All Purpose, All Natural Cleaners on the market today.

So remember, the next time you are at the grocery store and reach for that all purpose cleaner, it could be like putting a loaded gun under the kitchen sink!

Be Safe!
